Bone Broth Peppermint Hot Chocolate

I'm a big fan of bone broth for its beneficial nutrients, including collagen, amino acids, gelatin and other important minerals the body can easily absorb and utilize.

It's great for skin, bone, and immune health, and fantastic for the gut. So why not use it in hot chocolate? ;)

The cocoa powder has a magical way of hiding the brothy taste so you can sneak in all that nutrient-dense goodness into your chocolatey cup. Trust me on this one!

Bone Broth Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:
3/4 cup grass-fed or pasture-raised bone broth (see notes)
3/4 cup full-fat coconut milk (or full-fat milk of your choice - the creamier, the better)
1.5 tbsp pure maple syrup
2 tbsp high quality unsweetened cocoa or raw cacao powder
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2-3 drops of peppermint oil
Pinch of sea salt
Optional: 1 scoop gelatin or collagen powder for added protein and nutrients

Instructions:

1. Heat bone broth, milk and maple syrup in a small saucepan over medium high heat while stirring until just before it boils.

2. Carefully pour mixture into a blender, add remaining ingredients and blend on low until the powder has been fully combined. You could also skip the blender and use a frother wand or whisk with all ingredients added to the saucepan after removing from heat.

3. Pour into your favorite festive mug, and drink up!

A few notes:
  • Choose a classic bone broth rather than fancy flavors, like curry or chipotle. My fave brands are Bare Bones Broth, Kettle & Fire, and Bonafide Provisions, or make your own! I've tested with only beef and chicken bone broths so I can't speak to other types of bones.
  • Worried about the bone broth flavor? Reduce the amount of bone broth and increase the milk. 1/2 cup bone broth and 1 cup milk can be a good place to start.
  • If you're a Scrooge, the recipe is still delish without the peppermint. ;)

Enjoy!
